Yūsuf ibn Tāshufīn Biography:
Yusuf ibn Tashfin was a great Berber leader and the first ruler of the Almoravid dynasty. He was born in Morocco around 1061 and died in 1106, after leading a successful military campaign during which he conquered most of North Africa and parts of Spain.
He began his career as a general under the Almoravid Sultan, Yusuf bin Tashfin’s father-in-law. Under his leadership, the Almoravids went on to found Marrakech (c. 1062), conquered almost all of Morocco and Algeria and established their own kingdom. He then led a large army into Spain in 1086 to help the Muslim rulers fight against the Christian kingdoms. His forces were successful in driving out the Christian forces and establishing Muslim control over the region.
Yusuf ibn Tashfin went on to conquer other parts of North Africa and consolidate his power there, as well. He was also instrumental in unifying all of the Berber tribes under one banner, thus forming a strong political base for the dynasty he founded.
